Merritt Winsell was born on February 11, 1898, in Drakesville, Iowa. He was the son of Frank F Winsell.
Merritt graduated from Dexter (Iowa) High School in 1916. He served during World War I as a Cook in the 32nd Aero Squadron, Signal Corps. Winsell died in France on July 13, 1918, and is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA. He was one of the 171 American servicemen at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919.
