Robert Hancock "Buck" Wood, Jr. was born in August 1897, in Albemarle County, Virginia. He served in the 3rd Aviation Instruction Center as a First Lieutenant during World War I. He was killed in an airplane accident in France on August 13, 1918, and is now buried in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. 1Lt Wood was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919.
Va. student, 20-year-old Charlottesville resident, Lt. Robert “Buck” Wood plane was shot down in France during WWI. His remains are interred at St. Mihiel American Cemetery in France. Charlottesville’s first airport, Wood Field on Garth Road was named after him.
