Samuel J. Dunbar was born on March 25, 1916, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Sam J. Dunbar and Ella Cline Dunbar. He was married to Elizabeth LaRoche Mauger.
After the death of his parents, he moved to Philadelphia to live with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. M. T. Charlton.
Samuel served as a Captain in the Headquarters & Service Company, 147th Engineer Combat Battalion, during World War II. He was Killed in Action on March 24, 1945, in Germany and is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands.
