Stephen Donald Bakran was born on August 10, 1943, in Michigan. He was the son of Andrew F. Bakran and Katherine Grish Bakran.

At the time of his death, ARM2C Bakran was serving in the VB-4 Squadron aboard the USS Ranger. He was Killed in Action on October 4, 1943, during the Operation Leader in Bodo, Norway. It is believed that he died on impact when his plane crashed into the water after being hit by anti-aircraft fire.

ARM2C Bakran's body went missing, and his name is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom. His remains were subsequently found and are now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.
