Lt(JG) Sumner R. Davis served in the VB-4 Squadron aboard USS Ranger during World War II. On October 4, 1943, he was piloting an airplane, together with ARM2C as his gunner, during an air raid in Bodo, Norway. Hit by anti-aircraft fire, Davis alone survived and managed to deploy a life raft. He was picked up by the Germans later and taken as a prisoner.
