Donald Welker McCarley was born on June 23, 1919, in Ohio. He was the son of Lora Welker McCarley.

Donald served in the VB-4 Squadron aboard USS Ranger during World War II. A gunner of an airplane piloted by Lt(JG) Sumner R. Davis, their plane was shot down on October 4, 1944, over Bodo, Norway, during Operation Leader. He managed to survive the crash but was held in a Nazi POW camp in Germany until the end of the war.

McCarley died on June 25, 1998, at the age of 79, in Illinois, but his current burial place is unknown.
