John Robert Nowlin was born on June 16, 1922, in Freeman, West Virginia. He was the son of Claude M Nowlin.

John served in the 313th Fighter Squadron, 50th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot on the P-47 #42-8528 during World War II. On July 30, 1944, he took off from A-10 airfield in Carentan, France, for ground troop support. He was killed by enemy fighters around 3:00 PM, and his plane crashed towards La Crocquerie in the commune of Cérences. 2Lt Nowlin is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery, Montjoie Saint Martin, France.
