William Ray “Ray” Westbrooke was born on December 28, 1919, in Trion, Georgia. He was the son of Joseph Felton Westbrook and Addie Jewell Hollis Westbrook. He was married to Willie Hannah Westbrooke.

William served in the 10th Fighter Squadron, 50th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and Pilot on the P-47 #42-25988 during World War II. On August 8, 1944, 1Lt Westbrooke took off from A-10 airfield in Carentan, France, for an armed reconnaissance mission to Le Mans. During this mission, his plane was shot down, but he was able to bail out and survive. Cpt Westbrooke was captured by the Germans and was taken to Stalag Luft 1 near Barth, Western Pomerania, Germany.

Ray was a member of the American Ex-POW of Chatanooga, Ringgold VFW, and the American Legion Post 40. He died on September 27, 1999, at the age of 79. He is now buried in the Lakewood Memory Gardens South, Lakeview, Catoosa County, Georgia.
