Clair Bernard Edel was born on December 8, 1921, in Haverhill, Iowa. He was the son of Charles Henry Edel and Anna Margaret Stalzer Edel.

Clair served in the 313th Fighter Squadron, 50th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot on the P-47 #42-25759 during World War II. On August 26, 1944, 2Lt Edel took off from A-17 airfield in Méautis, France, for ground troop support. At 02:45 PM, he was killed in air combat with a Me109 fighter piloted by Klaus Mietusch. 2Lt Edel's plane crashed near Oissel. He is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
