Lt. Robert William Campbell enlisted in New York City on 23 July 1942. Assigned to the 369th Fighter Squadron on 29 December 1943, he flew 300 combat hours with the 359th Fighter Group before completing his combat tour of duty on 15 September 1944 and returning home to Syracuse, NY.

Lt. Campbell flew on a group flight with Lieutenants Suttle, Parsons, and Bur on 28 August 1944 for a strafing mission over Saarbrücken, Germany. Having their objectives been reached, the P51 Mustangs rejoined the formation except for Lt Ferris Suttle. Flying at too low altitude, Lt Suttle's plane hit the top of a tree along the Avenue des Vosges and crashed in a nearby field, killing Lt Suttle.
