George Wilmer Gromis was born on December 31, 1930, in Berks County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Oscar Edwin Gromis and Margaret Elizabeth Strauss Gromis.

He graduated from Wilson High School, West Lawn, and attended West Chester State Teachers College for three years.

Serving in the 48th Fighter Group as a pilot, 2Lt Gromis was killed on July 14, 1954, when his plane crashed while on a training mission near Munich, Germany. He is now buried in the Union Cemetery, Womelsdorf, Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA.
