Dayton David Atwood was born on September 22, 1922, in Lisbon, New Hampshire. He was the son of Arthur Clough Atwood and Abbie Grace Kimball Atwood.

Dayton resided in Grafton County, New Hampshire, prior to the war. He served in Company H, 289th Infantry Regiment, 75th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. PFC Atwood was Killed in Action on December 25, 1944, in Grandménil, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge. He is now buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Hombourg, Belgium.
