Francis served in the 10th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II. He was Killed in Action on January 24, 1945, during the liberation of Putscheid, Luxembourg. Pvt Blanchard is now buried in the Luxembourg American Cemetery, Luxembourg. He also has a cenotaph located in the Maple Forest Cemetery, Maple Forest Township, Crawford County, Michigan.
