Born on December 26, 1942, in Grand Prairie, Canada, Darryl was the son of Dean S. Lawson and Mary D. M. Lawson of Edmonton, Alberta. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 26, 1962. In 1965, he was serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 5th Marines when on September 22, his unit was redesignated to Company B, 1st Battalion, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF and arrived in Vietnam on November 11, 1965.

While in Da Nang, Darryl reenlisted on July 25, 1966, and with his first overseas tour completed, he was assigned for duty at the Marine Barracks in Bremerton, WA, USA.

Reassigned for duty in Vietnam, he joined Company C, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d MAR DIV (Rein) FMF on July 28, 1967.

"On September 17, the battalion began participation in Operation FREMONT. At 0715H, Company C departed Camp EVANS on foot to conduct a two-day search and destroy operation. At 0945H, the Company sustained two WIA's from friendly artillery fire " the rounds falling close to the Marines position.

Cpl Lawson died as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds before he could be evacuated for medical treatment.
