Gary Butt was born on May 8, 1951, in La Salle, Quebec, Canada. He was the son of Gordon and Elsie McCall Butt of Chateauguay, Quebec.

Gary arrived in Vietnam for duty on July 18, 1970, where he was assigned to and served with D Company, 4th Battalion, 503d Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade.

On April 3, elements of D Company were on a combat operation in the Soui Ca valley, approximately 1 kilometer south of the Van Canh airfield in Binh Dinh Province, when suddenly a mine was detonated, and the soldiers came under enemy attack. During the ensuing firefight, six men were killed in action before the enemy broke contact. One of the casualties was SSgt Butt, who was killed in action by fragmentation wounds from a hostile explosive device.
