Henry Louis Dew was born on September 16, 1944, in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, Canada. He was the son of Frank J Dew and Henriette Vienneau.

Before joining the US Army, Dew worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway in Maine, USA. At the time of his death, he was serving as a Specialist 4th Class in C Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. According to his friend and veteran Lester Randy Thompson, of Houlton, Maine, Dew was killed by a sniper hidden in a Vietnamese cemetery. Thompson, Charles Lindenmyer, and David Stoddard were on patrol with Dew when he was shot.
