John Christopher Sherin III was born on June 9, 1941, in Ashburn, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of John Christopher Sherin and Elaine Robertson Sherin.
At the time of his death, John was serving in the 71st Assault Helicopter Company, 145th Combat Aviation Battalion, 12th Combat Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade. On October 2, 1968, the U.S. Army helicopter UH-1D (tail number 66-16830) from the 71st Assault Helicopter Company was reportedly returning from a resupply mission when the aircraft crashed into the Truong Giang Estuary, five miles northwest of Chu Lai Airfield in Quang Tin Province, Vietnam. There were no survivors. The lost crewmen included aircraft commander 1LT Fred Z. Washburn, pilot WO1 John C. Sherin III, crew chief SP4 Donald L. Wester, and gunner SP4 Allan R. Walsh. A single passenger was aboard the aircraft, SP4 Charles R. Smidstra, an infantryman from A Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry, 196th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, who also perished in the crash.
