Michael John Dunn was born on September 20, 1946, in Canada. He was the son of John H Dunn and Pamela M. Dunn.

Michael served in Company D, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On January 19, 1968, SP5 Dunn, CPL Jennings, and PFC Anderson were setting up a night defensive position on a small hill their company referred to as LZ Shortie, about 3 miles northwest of Que Son in Quang Nai Province, Vietnam. All three soldiers were fatally injured when a friendly artillery short round fell within their perimeter and exploded nearby.
