He arrived in Vietnam on June 12, 1968, where he was assigned for duty with Company D, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

At the beginning of January, the 1st Battalion continued its mission of search and destroy while part of operation SCOTLAND II in the Hoa Hang District of Quang Tri Province just south of the DMZ. On January 9, H&S Company and Company began the heli-lift to LZ Cougar to begin their patrols to search for the enemy in the vicinity of Dong Long. With the landing completed and the men of H&S Company establishing the CP (Command Post) security, Company D began their movement north. PFC Green, who was the lead man of the column walking downhill hit a trip wire and detonated what was believed to have been a 105mm artillery round which exploded instantly killing the young Marine.
