Dick was called to military service in May 1943. He joined the paratroopers upon completion of basic training and was assigned to the 551st PIR. His unit save fierce fighting during the Battle of the bulge in and around Rochelinval, Belgium from November 1944 to January 1945. The battle of Rochelinval decimated the 551st PIR from 825 to 115 men. This resulted in the dismantling of the 551st and the remain men being reassigned to the 505th PIB. Half of his cremated remains were spread over the battle grounds of Rochelinval, Belgium. His remembrance headstone is located on the wall of remembrance at Ft. Rosecrans Military Cemetary in San Diago, California. www.usairborne.be Besides his personal decorations he was entitled to wear the Presidential Unit Citation with oak leaf cluster, the Croix de Guerre, the Fourragere to the Belgian Croix de Guerre, the Dutch Orange Lanyard and received for his service after the Second World War the Army of Occupation Medal with "Germany" clasp.
