Douglas S. "D. S." Connell was born on August 26, 1926. He was the son of Frank R. Connell and Bessie M. Brumfield Connell.

Douglas served in the 333rd Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was killed with other soldiers in an Army truck accident on October 22, 1945, in Hesperange, Luxembourg. PFC Connell is now buried in the Highland Cemetery, Okemah, Okfuskee County, Oklahoma, USA. His name on his headstone is spelled as Douglis.
