Selby Eual Watkins was born on September 7, 1918, in West Plains, Howell County, Missouri. He was the son of Alfred Eual Watkins and Pearl A. Burris Stuart. He was the husband of Vera Louise Huddleston Jones.

Selby served in the 333rd Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division, as a Staff Sergeant during World War II. He was killed with other soldiers in an Army truck accident on October 22, 1945, in Hesperange, Luxembourg. SSgt Watkins is now buried in the Union Hill Cemetery, Brandsville, Howell County, Missouri, USA.
