Russell Benson Van Buren was born on September 29, 1909, in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. He was the son of Charles Bradley Van Buren and Lena M. Van Buren, of North Troy, New York State, U.S.A., and husband of Dorothy Helen Van Buren.

Russell served in the 76 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Forcea as a Warrant Officer Class II during World War II. He lost his life when his plane, a Handley Page Halifax Mk II, crashed into the Waddenzee 10 km west of Harlingen, Holland (The Netherlands).
