THE “Russian” was the nickname of IVAN ALFEROFF ROCILLO, born in the district of Magdalena del Mar on September 3, 1943, son of a Russian citizen living in Peru and a lady from Lima with the last name Rocillo. He was the only boy of three siblings (Nina, Iván and Olga). They lived in the block. 6 of Huamanga, in the district of Magdalena del Mar.
From a very young age he stood out for his athletic demeanor and his love for soccer. More than once he ran after a ball defending the colors of his “Jr.Huamanga” neighborhood, in the disappeared Oratorio de Magdalena.
Like every “well-born” son of this district, he entered the glorious Zarumilla School, where he stood out not only for his wisdom but also for his character and mettle as a fighter. There is no doubt, anyone who didn't know how to fight in Zarumilla at that time, learned the hard way.
New York in the 60s, saw him walking through its streets, very different from that of his old and beloved Magdalena, there he shared his nostalgia for the distant homeland with Alfredo Palao, another Zarumilla native; with whom he enlisted in the US Army. He belonged to the First Battalion (Airborne) 12 Cavalry - Company A Co and had the rank of Specialist Forth Class / E4.
