John William Califf was born on July 22, 1918, in Carthage, Hancock County, Illinois. A graduate of Aledo High School, John received degrees from the University of Illinois and law school there, following which he was admitted to the bar on July 24, 1942. He left for training on August 8, 1942, and was assigned to overseas duty. John served in the 1st Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment, 1st Infantry Division, as a Sergeant during World War II. He was killed in the Bois des Chassis massacre in Ressons-le-Long, France, on August 31, 1944. He is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery, Dinozé, France.
