Burnell Rose was serving as the platoon sergeant combat engineer in Company A of the 40th Engineer Regt attached to First Airborne Force. He was killed while trying to recover the bodies of two French sisters and their 14-year-old nephew who had been killed by mines near a 12 ft deep mined crater that the Germans had blown to slow the Allies. He and another soldier, PFC Louis Green, were killed when a body they were attempting to remove by rope from the crater set off four Teller mines.
