John Richard Henwood was born on December 21, 1919, in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York. He entered military service on March 12, 1943. After training at Camp Livingston, La., and Amphibious training at Camp Gordon Johnson, Fla., he was sent to England attached to Company B, 2nd Ranger Battalion. While there, John married Miss Ruby White of the Isle of Write, England.
John was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944, at the age of 24, in Vierville-sur-Mer, during the American assault on Omaha beach in France. He is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
