Elmer Paul Olander was born on September 21, 1917, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was the son of Harry W. Olander and Emily Dahlstrom Olander.

Elmer served in Company B, 2nd Ranger Battalion, as a Technician 5th Grade during World War II. He was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944, at the age of 26, in Vierville-sur-Mer, during the American assault on Omaha Beach in France. He is now buried in the Acacia Park Cemetery and Mausoleum, Norwood Park Township, Cook County, Illinois, USA.
