Leon Harold “Red” Otto was born on May 21, 1918, in McCook, Red Willow County, Nebraska. He was the son of William Otto and Laura Matilda Harsch Otto.

Leon had four years of high school. He had a civil occupation as a bartender and was employed by Jack Holmes prior to his enlistment. He was married upon enlistment.

Leon entered military service in Sacramento, California. He served in Company F, 2nd Ranger Battalion, as a Staff Sergeant during World War II. He died on June 7, 1944, at the age of 26, from the wounds he received in battle at Pointe du Hoc during the American assault on Omaha Beach in France. He is now buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo County, California, USA.
