John Charles Shanahan was born on April 7, 1924, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was the son of Martin M. and Margaret (nee Lynch) Shanahan.
John served in Company A, 2nd Ranger Battalion, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944, at the age of 20, in Vierville-sur-Mer, during the American assault on Omaha Beach in France. He is now buried in the Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, USA.
