Frederick D. Smith was born on November 27, 1921, in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey. He was the son of Frank and Mary Smith.

Frederick graduated in 1940 from Crosby High School. He also attended Washington Grammar School. He served in the Connecticut National Guard and also participated in the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942-1943 during the Pacific War, where he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 102nd Infantry. In 1943, he voluntarily served and was assigned to Company F, 2nd Ranger Battalion, as a Staff Sergeant. SSgt Smith was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944, at the age of 22, in Vierville-sur-Mer, during the American assault on Omaha Beach in France. He is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
