Joseph Raphael Trainor was born on November 21, 1918, in Barneveld, Iowa County, Wisconsin. He was the son of Louis F. Trainor and Amelia E. Handel Trainor.

Joseph had a grammar school education, had a civil occupation as a skilled mechanic and repairman, and was single without dependents upon enlistment. He was employed by Louis Trainor Farming prior to his enlistment. He entered military service at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Joseph served in Company A, 2nd Ranger Battalion, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944, at the age of 25, during the American assault on Omaha Beach in France. PFC Trainor is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
