William Arthur “Bill” Bartlemay was born on October 30, 1925, in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. He was the son of Charles E. Bartlemay and of Myra Glenn Bartlemay, of Buffalo, New York State, U.S.A.

William served in the 428 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. He was one of a seven-member crew flying on a Lancaster aircraft that was shot down during a daylight raid on Essen, Germany.

William was 16 years old and living in Buffalo, New York when he came to Hamilton, Ontario on Dec 16, 1941 and enlisted in the RCAF using the name and birth certificate of his older brother, Irvin Victor Bartlemay, who was born on Jul 15, 1923. He was one of a seven member crew flying on a Lancaster aircraft that was shot down during a daylight raid on Essen, Germany.
