Clifford Robert Bronson was born on September 3, 1920, in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. He was the son of Paul S. Bronson and Ethel Powers Bronson.

Clifford enlisted in the Army on July 12, 1938, as part of the 3rd Infantry. In October 1940, he entered the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). He was assigned to the # 97 Squadron (Achieve Your Aim)

On November 8, 1941, while on active duty with the Royal Air Force (RAF) aboard a bomber patrolling the North Sea, Sgt. Bronson’s Manchester aircraft # L 7466 was shot down, and Bronson and the rest of the crew were declared missing in action.
