Alexander Carruthers was born on May 13, 1914. He was the son of James D. Carruthers and Agnes D. Carruthers, of Tonawanda, New York, U.S.A.

Alexander served in the 214 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Pilot Officer during World War II. On March 12, 1943, his crew took off at 20h02 from Chedburgh, England, on a mission to Stuttgart, Germany. Shot down by a night fighter piloted by Oblt. Hans Autenrieth II/NJG4, their aircraft crashed at Fagnieres - 2 km ENE of Chalons-en-Champagne, France. Only one member of the crew survived. Pilot Officer Carruthers was one of the casualties.
