Robert James Cowie was born on November 23, 1920, in Saskatchewan, Canada. He was the son of William and Mary Sutherland Cowie, of Los Angeles, California.

Robert served in the 76 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Pilot Officer during World War II. A crew member on the Halifax aircraft #MZ 516, he was Killed in Action on February 1, 1945, during their return from operations over Mainz, Germany, when the aircraft starboard outer engine caught fire. The starboard outer engine began to vibrate at 7000 ft. while over East Anglia. Attempts to feather the engine failed and the order to bale out was given. Only three were able to comply before the aircraft hit the ground at Banham, northwest of Diss.
