Robert Regis Cummings was born on June 16, 1914, in Punxsutawney, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Thomas P. and Mary Cummings.
Robert served in the 617 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Warrant Officer II during World War II. Aboard the Lancaster aircraft #ED 825, his crew took off from RAF Tempsford, England, at 20h35, for an SOE mission to northern France. Shot down flak, their aircraft crashed near the commune of Doullens, France, killing all crew members.
