Maurice Vaughn Durling was born on January 5, 1922, in Berwick, Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was the son of Lloyd Stanley and Margaret Mae Durling, of Dorchester, Massachusetts.

Maurice served in the 153 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Sergeant during World War II. He was killed on January 2, 1945, with the rest of his 7-man crew when their Lancaster bomber PB515 collided in mid-air with Lancaster NG421 soon after taking off to attack Nuremburg.
