John Richard Gilbert was born on October 28, 1922, in Highland Park, Wayne County, Michigan. He served in the #78 Squadron (Nemo Non Paratus) of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Sergeant during World War II. On August 6, 1942, his crew took off at 21:55 hrs for an operation at Bochum in Germany. Outward-bound, the aircraft was shot down by the night fighter crew of Oberleutnant Hans-Dieter Frank & Unteroffizier Erich Gotter of the 2./NJG 1, who were flying a Bf 110 F-4 from Venlo airfield. Sergeant Gilbert was killed in this incident.
