John Hehir was born in New York. He was the son of Matthew J. and Bridie Hehir, of Buffalo, New York.

John served in the #426 Thunderbird Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Pilot Officer during World War II. He was Killed in Action on April 10, 1943, when his Wellington X HE652 aircraft, which took off at 23h12 from RAF Dishforth, England, was shot down by a night fighter (Hptm Wilhelm Herget 1).
