Geoffrey Winslow Hess was born on April 20, 1914, in New Jersey. He was the son of Walter Leon Hess and Beatrice Hess; husband of Eleanor Low Hess, of Fort Gary, Manitoba. B.A. (McGill University, Montreal).

Geoffrey served in the 101 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Officer during World War II. He was declared Killed in Action on March 15, 1945, when his Lancaster III DV298 went missing during night operations over Dahlbruch, Germany.
