John Wilson Kauffman, Jr. was born on January 5, 1922, in Arlington, Virginia. He served in the United States Marine Corps (Sumay Detachment) as a Private First Class during World War II. He was killed on December 10, 1941, in the Marine Barracks Naval Station during the Japanese invasion of Guam. He was buried in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Philippines, was later transferred, and is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii.
