Melvin Olaf Hovinen was born on July 16, 1919, in Hancock, Michigan. He was the son of Olaf and Leila Hovinen of Wakefield, Michigan.
Melvin enlisted on November 1, 1941, in Windsor, Ontario. He served in the 106 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Officer during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 13, 1943, when his Lancaster aircraft # DV 181 failed to return from a trip to Turin, Italy. His body was never found.
