Orval Benjamin Hughes was born on October 24, 1912, in Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Edwin Platt Hughes and Sarah Emma Church Hughes. His family immigrated to the U.S., settling in Niagara Falls, Niagara County, New York. Orval attended and graduated from Niagara Falls High School.

He became interested in flying and was one of a group of young flyers to organize the Niagara Falls Aero Club. Responding to the call for capable pilots during World War II, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Upon completing the required basic training, he was assigned to the African war theater in March 1941.

A crew member on the Wellington aircraft #Z 8907, Orval was Killed in Action on November 20, 1941, when his crew was on a special night operation and was shot down in the Halfaya Pass near Sidi Omar, Egypt.
