Cephus Jefferson Abels was born on April 8, 1924, in Sallis, Attala County, Mississippi. He was the son of Carl Hanson Ables and Mary Jenkins Ables.

Cephus served in HQ Company,1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1944, during the Battle for Guam. He is now buried in the Parkway Cemetery, Kosciusko, Attala County, Mississippi, USA.
