James Edward Land was born on December 1, 1919, in Houston, Chickasaw County, Mississippi. He was the son of John Francis Land and Beulah Mae Ellison Land.

James served in the 15 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Pilot Officer during World War II. He was declared Killed in Action on September 19, 1942, when his Sterling aircraft failed to return from operations; presumed enemy action. His body was never recovered.
