Paul James Maroney was born on January 18, 1921, in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. He was the son of James Edward Marone, of Buffalo, New York, and Florence (nee Malican) Maroney (deceased when Paul enlisted).

Paul served in the #405 City of Vancouver Squadron as a Sergeant during World War II. He was declared Missing in Action on November 9, 1942, when his Halifax II aircraft W1152, which took off from Station 408 in Beaulieu, England, went missing during an attack on La Gironde Harbour, France. His body was never recovered.
