Walter Murphy Sies was born on November 10, 1911, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of George Walter and Fannie Sies. He was married to Thelma May Sies.
On October 16, 1940, Walter was examined, and on March 22, 1943, Walter enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was admitted and began his training as a flight engineer. After completing his training, Walter was assigned to the 790th Bomb Squadron, 467th Bomb Group, which was stationed at RAF Rackheath in England. From here, Walter and his crew flew several missions against Germany.
During Walter's last mission, he managed to leave the aircraft in time. However, his parachute did not open properly, so Walter was killed when he fell to the ground.
