Edmund Rothell Ray was born on November 28, 1917, in Hinesville, Liberty County, Georgia. He was the son of William B. Ray and Leila V. Mobley Dutton. He was the husband of Helen B. Jeznis Ray.

Edmund served in the 408 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Officer during World War II. He was declared Missing in Action on April 4, 1943, when his Halifax aircraft #HR 713, which took off at 19h45 from RAF Leeming, failed to return from night operations and lost without a trace. His body was never found.
