Eugene Garland Robertson was born on December 23, 1913, in Contra Costa County, California. He was the son of Thad Everett Robertson and Hattie M. Witter Robertson.

A clerk by trade and residing at the YMCA in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, he enlisted in the RCAF on February 17, 1941, in Windsor. Eugene served in the #16 Operational Training Unit of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Sergeant during World War II. On August 1, 1942, aboard the Vickers Wellington (#HF852) aircraft, with an aircrew of five, his crew was returning from an operation over Dusseldorf, Germany, when it was shot down by a German night fighter. The Wellington crashed near Elsendorp in Holland (The Netherlands), taking the lives of the aircrew.
